In the movie, Angelina Jolie plays Christine Collins, a single mother who faces every parent's worst nightmare, a missing child. The story is based on real incidents and is set in Los Angeles in 1928. Collins says goodbye to her nine-yaer-old son, Walter, and leaves for work. When she returns Walter is missing. A massive hunt for the child ensues. Months pass and suddenly a boy claiming to be Walter is found. The Los Angeles Police Department, seize on the opportunity to earn some browne points and arrange for a photo op of the mother and child reunion, despite Collins insisting the child is npt hers.
Collins refuses the LAPD's manufactured happy ending, she is labelled delusional and sent to a mental institution. Collins finds an ally in Reverend Briegleb, a church activist and together the two set out to reveal the corruption and sleaze that lies beneaththe shining facade of Los Angeles.
